5New York’s deposit rules, on one page
- A deposit can’t be more than one month’s rent.
- 14 days after you move out: deposit back, or an itemized statement. Miss it, and the landlord loses the right to keep any of it.
- No deductions for ordinary wear and tear. In a dispute, the landlord shows a deduction was reasonable.
- Rent-controlled apartments and some senior housing follow different rules.
